By Gianmarco Antosca, Youth Free Expression Program Coordinator at the National Coalition Against Censorship, a Unite Against Book Bans partner.
America is at a turning point. Censorship is on the rise, and our long-held democratic values are facing an unprecedented threat. At the center of this fight are young peoples’ rights to express themselves: to read freely, live openly, and to speak without the fear of censorship. Now more than ever, we need young peoples’ voices to guide us into a more democratic and freer future.
The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) offers high school students a way to join the fight with the Student Advocates for Speech (SAS) Leadership Program! Through the SAS program, NCAC educates, amplifies, and empowers the next generation of free speech leaders to live our American values and embody our democratic rights.
Applications Invited Through June 2
Applications are now open for the 2025-2026 cohort of the Student Advocates for Speech Leadership Program! If you, or a high school student you know, are ready to stand up for democracy, now is your moment. The SAS program is open to any high school students in the United States who are interested in becoming free speech advocates and making a real impact in their communities. Join us in the journey to defend the First Amendment and champion the principles of free expression for all.
About the SAS Leadership Program
The SAS program equips students with the tools, knowledge, and connections to effectively challenge censorship and defend their rights to freedom of thought, inquiry, and expression. Through a series of virtual monthly meetings, workshops, and networking opportunities, students will learn from leading First Amendment advocates and free expression experts. Participants will develop strategic media and advocacy skills, and engage with real-world issues affecting their schools and communities.
Student Advocates for Speech Leaders have been nationally recognized for their advocacy, including by the White House, state governments, and national news publications. SAS Leaders publish op-eds, appear on podcasts, have been featured by local and national news outlets, share anti-book ban videos, and regularly work with authors and journalists.
NCAC Stands Ready to Support Applicants
The SAS program is held virtually and is free for all participants. Visit NCAC.org/SAS, apply online here, or contact Gianmarco@NCAC.org to learn more.
Students ARE our democracy—and their advocacy makes our country and our communities fairer, freer, and more vibrant. Together, we can defend the right to read, speak, and think freely—because silence is not an option when it comes to censorship. Join us, and let students’ voices be heard!
